Two unbeaten teams St Peter’s Bambalapitiya will meet Thurstan College Colombo in their under 19 division 1 cricket Tier B final which scheduled to be played today (19) at Police Park grounds, Bambalapitiya.
Peterites will lead by spin all rounder Wanuja Sahan while Thurstan will captain by all rounder Bhawantha Jayasinghe.
St. Peter’s entered the final when they beat Isipathana College by 4 wickets in the semi-final played at Surrey grounds Maggona while they advanced to the quarter-final as group champion with 5 wins from 5 matches. At the quarter final St Peter’s beat Mahinda by 5 wickets and left hander Shehan Botheju was the match winner scoring a superb unbeaten knock of 102 in 124 balls with 10 fours’.
Peterite skipper Wanuja Sahan the leading leg spinner of the side having more experience and he represented National under 19 team. They have two more youth caps in Lahiru Dawatage the wicket keeper and useful middle order batter and left arm medium paceman Danal Hemananda. The spin department is led by Wanuja Sahan with two other bowlers Shenon Rodrigo and Niman Umesh also among the wickets in this season. Shehan Botheju, Lahiru Dawatage, Rusanda Gamage and Skipper Wanuja Sahan are their key stroke makers.
Thurstan skipper Bhawantha Jayasinghe the son of former Thurstan skipper Chaminda Jayasinghe(1993 captain) came to the final with an unbeaten record. Bhawantha Jayasinghe is top order batter and right arm medium paceman having lot of experience while Bhawantha and Vihas Thewmika are the centurions of the side. Both scored centuries against Dharmashoka in their league round game while they scored 357 for 3 wickets in 50 overs in this match which was the highlight among team totals so far in this tournament. Vihas Thewmika was the match winner scoring 33 and taking 3 for 27 with his off spin at the semi final against Maris Stella Negombo which they won by 66 runs according to the D/ L method.
Thurstan openers Tharindu Harshana and Pasindu Ratnayake are among the runs while they are expected to pave a good platform to build the innings followed by skipper Bhawantha Jayasinghe and Vihas Thewmika are to strengthen their batting order. Nipun Premaratne, Bawantha Jayasinghe and Thanuga Palihawadana are their key bowlers while off spinner Vihas Thewmika always play good supporting role.
Thurstan advanced to the quarter final as group champion with 4 wins and they beat Lumbini Colombo to advance to the semi-final earlier.
The two coaches Roger Wijesuriya (St Peter’s) and Heshan Tillekarathne (Thurstan) give their guidance to the teams and both sides are keen to make good battle at this final.
