Sri Lankan Ambassador to Jordan Meets Jordanian Agricultural Minister

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara met with the Minister of Agriculture of Jordan, Khaled Hnaifat on 15 February 2024, and had in-depth exchanges on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the sphere of agriculture. The Director of Agreements and International Cooperation Directorate was also present at the meeting.

Welcoming the Ambassador, Minister Hnaifat expressed his wishes to further develop bilateral relations between the two countries by expanding trade in agricultural products and strengthening agricultural technology exchanges.

Conveying greetings, Ambassador Wijegunasekara stated that Sri Lanka and Jordan have enjoyed long-standing bilateral relationship and cooperation that have been constantly elevated to new heights at various levels. Stating that agriculture is vital to the well-being of all nations, the Ambassador briefed on Sri Lanka’s recent achievements in the agricultural industry.

The Ambassador pointed out that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries has increased significantly during the previous years, and the trade balance has been favorable for Sri Lanka. The total export value from Sri Lanka to Jordan was US$63.5 million in 2022, while the total import from Jordan was US$2 million.

The Ambassador expressed Sri Lanka’s commitment to an intense dialog with Jordan aimed towards expanding agri-food products to the Jordanian domestic market. In this effort, the Sri Lanka Embassy in Jordan will bridge the gap between the relevant institutions and enterprises of both countries and assist to develop cooperation and deliver solid outcomes.
