In the first eight months of this year, the value of remittances to Sri Lanka has increased to US$ 3,863 million, showing a remarkable growth in the remittances of foreign employees.
According to a latest report released by the Central Bank, this is a remarkable growth when compared to the value of remittances during the corresponding period last year. The value of the remittances during the period under review last year was US$ 2,215 million, by foreign Sri Lankan workers who directly contribute to the strengthening of the country’s economy.
The Central Bank also said that in August this year alone, the remittances of foreign employees were US$ 499 million, compared to the remittances of US$ 325 million made in August last year.
Based on provisional data, the total number of people who left for foreign jobs this year is 311,056. Meanwhile, compared to the 143,039 tourist arrivals recorded in July this year, the tourist arrivals in August this year dropped to 136,405, but the tourist arrivals have grown significantly from January to August this year.
However, 904,318 cumulative tourist arrivals were recorded during the same period of 2023 compared to 496,430 cumulative tourist arrivals recorded during the corresponding period of 2022.
In August this year, tourism earnings have been recorded as US$ 211 million, which has been reported
as US$ 219 million in the previous month and US$ 68 million in the corresponding month of the previous year.
Accordingly, tourism earnings from January to August of this year are reported to be US$ 1,304 million, which is a remarkable increase compared to US$ 833 million recorded during the same time in 2022.
India, United Kingdom, China, Germany and Russia are among the countries that brought in the recorded highest amount of tourism earnings during this period.
