Spotted: Painted Reclaimed Wood

By Heather @home_modern

While out and about in Austin yesterday I stopped at a glorious upscale vintage furniture store called Uptown Modern. They have beautiful mint condition mid-century modern pieces for the serious collector. They also know what they have, so there are no “deals” to be had here, rather it’s the place to shop for the once-in-a-lifetime piece you’ve been saving up for. However, I did spot an item that I wanted to share as a super accessible DIY. First, let me preface this with reminding you of my affinity for gold logs…

While at Uptown Modern I spotted several different wood pieces that had been lightly spray painted gold for a huge sculptural impact.

Here’s one of them that I snapped with my iPhone (I thought that was more discreet than getting out my giant camera!). You could use any piece of wood with sculptural interest. I would start with found driftwood pieces or anything with knots in it.

They had several pieces that were painted white, which had an equally cool effect. This was one of them. Another white piece in the store was nothing more than a solid stump piece (imagine a section of wood before you split it for firewood). Because of its solid base it could be used as a stool as well.

Would any of you try this? I think a large, organic gold piece could look great in place of our gold faux logs if we decided to swap them out in the future (they hold tea lights right now).

XO,
Heather
