I’ve already tackled Peacock, Hulu, and Disney plus. So, next up is MAX. We’re looking exclusively for titles that in some sliver of connection work as Spooky, Scary, or Horrifying this Halloween season. Do you think MAX has 10?
- Beowulf I’m going to include this, because the whole story of Beowulf involves him fighting a legendary monster. this 2007 adaptation used that hyper-realistic animation, and while I haven’t seen it with audio description, I would say that this would lightly qualify for people looking for lighter, less scarier fare, but still want something with a monster in it.
2) Bodies Bodies Bodies
A group of friends gather at a large home during a storm, and start to play a game. but is it all a game, or does someone in the group secretly want them all dead? This A24 film has some nice twists and turns, and while it might be a little scary for some, it is mostly really interestingly crafted moments that make this a choice for the season.
3) Evil Dead Rise
I do have a review on here for this, and I enjoyed it for the most part.It is very gory, moderately scary, but has a very odd humor that runs through it that makes it a little less terrifying. Still, it is a great horror pick for the season.
4) I Saw The TV Glow
A new arrival for MAX (who is also debuting A24’s Maxxxine this month), a teenager discovers a cult TV show with his friend, and then the show is cancelled and he has no one to obsess over the show with, and his life gets very weird. It is a very weird movie. Scary? Maybe. Weird? definitely. unsettling? Sure.
5) Malignant
I have yet to see this. I feel like it has been on MAX forever, and I still haven’t seen it. Is this October the game changer? I’ve heard mixed things, but I’ve heard the violence is quite pronounced. So, I’ll throw it on here. It’s better than having to repeat the Harry Potter franchise, which i already mentioned on the Peacock list.
6) Men
A deeply unsettling horror title from Alex Garland with an ending you won’t soon forget.
7) Midsomer
Ari Aster’s deeply unsettling horror film with an ending you won’t soon forget. I’m sensing a theme where A24 likes to have deeply unsettling horror movies from next-gen directors.
8) Paranormal Activity
Max actually has the whole franchise except for next Of Kin, which was a Paramount Plus release. The whole franchise has audio description. Really, I’d recommend the first, and maybe the second. Everything else loses that found footage feel and is way overfunded.
9) Signs
Keep some water lying around. you may never know when you’ll need this. M Night Shyamalan. This does have some jump scares that have gworko
10) The Nun 2
They have the sequel but not the other? So weird.
