The Glistening Waters of the Mersey
So the Mersey River isn’t the best choice for taking a dip, but the waters sure do sparkle. Strolling around the Albert Dock or along the Otterspool Promenade, you can enjoy the midday sunlight bouncing off the calm lapping waters of the Mersey.
The Tasty Foods of Liverpool
The dish most famously served in Liverpool is Scouse, an affectionate nickname for a meaty stew, lobscouse, which was a favorite dish for sailors from Northern Europe. The same nickname was also given to people who were born and bred in Liverpool and that lovely sing song accent. Given the fact that the city was and still is a major seaport, the people adopted Scouse it is now recognized as the traditional dish of the city.
As well as sampling local cuisine Liverpool has a number of fine dining restaurants all serving up delicious dishes that could also pass as works of art. There are classical places such as The Art School and The Carpathia Champagne Bar and Restaurant that provide fine dining with modern twists. Then there are the likes of Mayur and San Carlo, offering diners a chance to sample more exotic dishes from distant shores. Suffice to say when deciding where to eat in Liverpool you are spoiled for choice.
A Long Cool Cocktail…or two
As well as your typical British pubs with beer mats on the walls and that local cheery atmosphere, Liverpool also boasts a number of top class cocktail bars and lounges. There are at least 25 quality venues across the city where patrons are guaranteed fabulous atmosphere as well as expertly mixed beverages that will tantalize the taste buds.
Blind Tiger’s elaborate outdoor courtyard and delicious dim sum nibbles are a real treat. Or descend into the underground at Maya for a taste of decadence with it’s day of the dead style atmosphere, gated crypt like booths and a menu full of the tastes of Mexico.
Lounging in the Sun
Surely there isn’t anywhere in Liverpool where you can pull up a deck chair and spend a day sunbathing without getting questionable glances from the wider public? Think again.
This year Liverpool Village was introduced to the World Heritage Waterfront. Think white sandy man made beaches, food and drink vendors and deck chairs all lined up along the banks of the Mersey. Grab your bucket and spade it’s time to spend a day at the beach.
Take in the sights
With four major art galleries, five major museums and plethora of stunning ancient buildings, you only need take a stroll through the streets to soak up all the culture of Liverpool. The city itself is steeped in Maritime history which is responsible for its rich cultural heritage. Once one of the busiest sea ports in the UK Liverpool owns a number of firsts where transatlantic travel is concerned. This is heavily reflected in most of the architecture as well as the traditional maritime spirit of the city. With strong connections to early UK slave trade and immigration, Liverpool adopted many cultures from overseas that are still apparent today.
The International Slavery Museum is the only one of its kind, highlighting both past and present slavery issues and concerns. The World Museum provides a glimpse into global culture as well as holding interactive temporary exhibitions on space exploration and advances in science.
At the Tate on Albert Dock visitors can peruse works from classic and contemporary artists. A most popular exhibition this summer has been the Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms. What’s even better, entry to each of the great galleries and museums is completely free, the perfect day out that everybody can enjoy. For the entire summer of 2016 Liverpool Biennial will be hosted across the city in various unexpected venues. This biannual event is just one of the things that make Liverpool a city that stands out from the rest in the art stakes.
