Inspirational teacher inspires latino students with no future. Where did I see this? Oh yeah, Macfarland USA. That was a great movie, and I’d classify Spare Parts as a “good” movie. It’s hampered a bit by George Lopez’s limitations as a dramatic actor. Luckily, just like MacFarland USA, they found four hispanic teen actors who are really good. I suppose that there are just so many amazing movies about the same subject. And it’s not Dead Poets Society, Stand and Deliver, Mona Lisa Smile, or even The Emperor’s Club. It’s a good film, but I’m not sure I’ll remember it ten years from now. If the ending wasn’t so obvious, it would be a really heartwarming moment. But, you know they’re going to do well.

I don’t think Lopez landed the the dramatic material well enough. I think he was fine, but in the same way Kevin James would have been fine. He lacks the emotional gravitas. Luckily, his supporting cast doesn’t. Though, really, Lopez and Marisa Tomei really have no chemistry. I mean, she tried, but… I’m glad their relationship was mostly just flirting because anything more would have felt even more awkward.

It’s a pretty good movie. I’ve seen way worse this year. If you’re looking for something to rent in Redbox, this is definitely a viable option.

FINAL GRADE: B
