Teaching Spanish sight words to young children is an exciting milestone in their reading journey—especially when you’re educating bilingual learners. Sight words play a crucial role in helping kids build reading confidence and fluency since these are commonly used English words that often can’t be sounded out phonetically.

As bilingual parents and teachers, finding fun and immersive ways to teach Spanish sight words that balance both English and Spanish can help kids grasp vocabulary in both languages. And what better way to engage children than with a winter-themed approach?

Below, you’ll find creative Spanish sight word winter activities, tips for incorporating Spanish into informational texts, and ideas to make reading fun and meaningful during the chilly winter months!

Spanish Sight Word Winter Activities for Bilingual Learners

Snowflake Sight Word Hunt

Transform ordinary sight word practice into a playful snowflake hunt! Write sight words (in English and/or Spanish) on paper snowflakes and hide them around the classroom or home. Kids can “collect” the snowflakes and earn points for correctly reading the words aloud.

Tip for bilingual learners: Pair each snowflake with its translation (snowflake – copo de nieve) to help children make language connections. Or, use the Snowflake sight word charts and cards.

Penguin Sight Word Rescue

Let penguins join the fun! Create “igloos” or “icebergs” labeled with sight words, and have toy penguins or cutouts that need rescuing. Kids will read the words to help the penguins reach safety.

Challenge twist: Write the words on the penguins in English and label the igloos in Spanish. Children match the words by reading them in both languages. For example, a penguin labeled “play” would find its match with an igloo labeled “jugar.”

Build-a-Snowman Using Spanish Sight Words

Learning sight words can be hands-on and creative! Write sight words on parts of a snowman (head, middle, bottom), and have kids assemble the snowman by reading the words.

Bilingual variation: Add translations to each section of the snowman, such as:

  • Head: “play / jugar”
  • Middle: “run / correr”
  • Bottom: “blue / azul”

Encourage students to say the sight word in both languages before adding the piece to their snowman. Also, build a snowman using these fun activities.

Snowball Toss Spanish Sight Word Game

Use small “snowballs” made from cotton balls, foam balls, or crumpled paper. Label buckets or cups with sight words, and kids toss the snowball into the bucket corresponding to the correct word.

Expand for bilingual practice: Create two sets of buckets—one for English words and the other for Spanish words. As kids toss, they can call out both versions of the word.

Winter “Write in the Snow”

Cover a tray with salt, shaving cream, or craft sand to mimic snow. Call out a sight word, and kids write it in the “snow” using their fingers. Or, you can show the English sight words and your students can write it in Spanish. Or, your students can do the opposite (show the word in Spanish and write it in English).

Challenge for bilingual learners: Ask children to write the word first in English, then erase it and write it in Spanish! Or use interactive letter games or activities with a holiday-theme.

Spanish Sight Word Winter Scavenger Hunt

Plan a scavenger hunt!

  • Hide paper snowflakes, scarves, penguins, or icicles around the house or classroom.
  • Label each object with sight words in both English and Spanish.
  • Ask kids find each item, ask them to read the words aloud.

Bonus tip: Take this activity outdoors if possible (weather permitting)—write sight words on washable surfaces like sidewalk chalk or bubble wrap-shaped snow pieces for a nature-inspired scavenger hunt.

Icy Spanish Sight Word Freeze

Freeze laminated sight word flashcards in blocks of ice. Kids thaw them in warm water or use a spoon to “chip away” the frozen layer. Once revealed, they read each sight word aloud before moving on to the next snow-block.

Pro tip for bilingual practice: Write Spanish translations on the back of each flashcard to expand vocabulary!

Incorporating Spanish Sight Words into Informational Texts

Sight words practice doesn’t have to be limited to games—it can seamlessly tie into everyday reading routines. Nonfiction and informational texts open opportunities for real-world connections, and here are some tips for integrating Spanish sight words with reading:

Highlight Key Vocabulary in Both Languages

Before reading nonfiction books, highlight a few keywords (water, earth) in both English and Spanish (agua, tierra). Encourage kids to look for and recognize these words throughout the text. Encourage your students to become active readers with a marker or color pencil. And, instruct your students to highlight those words in the text.

For example:

  • English: “Can you spot the word ‘water’ in this sentence?”
  • Spanish: “Now, where do you see ‘agua’?”
