"We have decided to implement perimeter controls around Segrià (county) in response to data confirming a significant growth in the number of Covid-19 cases," Catalan regional president Quim Torra announced at a conference. hurry.

The confinement began Saturday at noon and includes the provincial capital of Lleida. It will be enforced by 24 police checkpoints around the county perimeter, preventing entry and exit, except for work or caring for people with special needs, two Catalan government spokesmen told CNN.

The internment decision has no time limit and will be in force as long as it is necessary to fight the epidemic in the county, added the two spokesmen for the Catalan government.

In the past few weeks, medical personnel have attempted to control various coronavirus epidemics in the county, involving seasonal agricultural workers in agricultural businesses, as well as an elderly care facility and a small hotel that looks after homeless.

Spain has recorded more than 28,000 deaths and 250,000 cases of the pandemic, one of the hardest hit countries in Europe. But national confinement for 3.5 months slowed the pace of the virus, and the Spanish government lifted it on June 21, giving back control to 17 Spanish regional governments.

Since then, authorities have reported around 50 outbreaks of new cases across the country, located around businesses, healthcare facilities and even at parties. But none has reached the level of the situation in the county of Segrià.

There, residents will be able to travel to the county for essentials, but public social gatherings will be limited to 10 people, said the Catalan government.

Elsewhere, in southern Malaga, whose airport is a major entry point for tourists visiting the Spanish beaches of the Costa del Sol in the Mediterranean, medical authorities are investigating an epidemic with 105 confirmed cases of Covid- 19, said the Andalusian regional government on its website.

In Granada, which houses the cultural site of the Alhambra Palace, they are also investigating five other epidemics, with a combined total of 29 confirmed cases, mainly in the region, said the Andalusian government.
