Hey y'all, I'm Stephanie from over at Qualls' Quirks and I'm going share the 5 most important things about the south. First, let me tell you I do say Y'ALL a lot. And yes, that's how I really talk. Second, I am so super duper excited that Anna was so gracious to let me guest post today! I know she's a southern belle like myself so I know she won't mind my topic! Let's get this party started!
Of course I'm not speaking for everybody but I'm just saying a true southern belle knows who her Maker is. Now, I ain't saying that I don't fall short every now and then. I watched Magic Mike (mm, mm, mm yummy) and I occasionally have a glass of wine with my hubs. Or a beer. Whatev. We try not to judge around here! But come Sunday morning my hind end is at church thanking the one true God who created me and gave me this fabulous life! Take it or leave it sistaaaas. For the quickie on my life go here.
There is a common misconception that is made about the south and it is that all food is fried. Yes, we fry chicken, mushrooms, cheese, Moon Pies, Snickers and even ice cream but there is a lot more to us than grease and trans fat!! If you ever decide to visit the south I would highly suggest that you eat at a local restaurant. Google whatever city or town you'll be in and find some local restaurants to try. If you're staying close to the coast you can find some of the best surf turf seafood you'll ever get your hands on. My family lives in New Orleans and let me tell you, they cook it up GOOD down there! Give us a chance!
Just a few suggestions:Lulu's in Gulf Shores, Alabama: The atmosphere is what makes it so great next to the AMAZING food! Plus, Lulu is Jimmy Buffett's (Margaritaville, anyone?) sister and I hear he sometimes makes an appearance there now and then!The Lady and Sons in Savannah, Georgia: This is Paula Deen's restaurant, where you CAN get your fried food fix! If you don't know who Paula Deen is...then bless your heart.Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, Louisiana: When you visit New Orleans you MUST eat a beignet from Cafe du Monde. It's just a must. End of story. Don't know what a beignet is?? Google it. Oh my goodness.
This is probably one of my favorite things about the south. Except for when I'm driving. I honestly believe that we take the time to appreciate the little things. I know this all sounds so cliche but there's nothing better than sitting on the front porch in the summer after a long day at the lake and listening to the crickets. Now I've lived in the city and I've lived in the country and there is absolutely NO comparison. Being able to walk outside at night and see every star in the universe is aaamazing. You can see a shooting star on any clear night. We talk slow. We walk slow. We window shop slow. We shake hands. We wave at complete strangers when they're out mowing the lawn. It's just how we do. It's not for everyone but it sure is for me!
I know we've all got our own preference but no matter your preference I'm convinced any woman could find her a man in the south! They just don't grow 'em like this anywhere else. (Sorry, I snagged the best one so you'll have to settle for the rest.) They love their mommas, they work hard, they love harder, they have strong hands and sexy tans...oh my, the list could go on and on!! Forget eHarmony ladies, get your booties down here to the south and you'll have NO problem finding your soulmate. Just bear in mind, you may find him out on a tractor.
Ok ok, please don't let me lose you here! I'm a history major and I contribute my passion for history mostly to all the amazing, historical places I've visited throughout the south. Now I know the rest of the country has a lot of great places too, but so much of what made our nation what it is today took place below the Mason-Dixon line. 5 minutes from my house is a cemetery where Confederate Generals who fought in the Civil War were laid to rest. It's one of the most sobering things to see. Plus there's a lot of other cool things to see too like the Ole Smokey Moonshine Distillery. If you're ever in Tennessee, GO TO IT. Buy the peach moonshine! It is fabulous! And their wine is to die for. Seriously! GO! Oh, and it's not illegal either!
I guess that about wraps it up! I hope you guys enjoyed this and I hope it shed a little light on the already sunny south! Like I said, there's a lot of misconceptions about the south but I think it's the greatest place on earth. So many of you lovely ladies hail from the east coast, west coast, and from the north and I LOVE reading y'alls blogs. They've opened my eyes to new things and they really make me wanna get out of this small town and visit some of your big cities!! I hope this blog made some of you wanna turn the station to country, put on some flip flops, and head south without looking back!
