Course: Waialea Country Club
Par: 70
Length: 7,068 yards
Prize Pool: $5,600,000
Last Years Champion: Russell Henley
Although marks only the second PGA Tour event of 2014, the Sony Open is the eighth event of the 2013-14 season. This week we will see a full 144 player field, packed with talented golfers looking to start their season off with a victory.
Golf Channel Notes:
Russell Henley made his first career event as a professional memorable last year, breaking the Sony Open 72-hole scoring record by four shots en route to winning. New Breed Of Talent:24 of the 25 graduates from the 2013 Web.com Tour season will tee it up this week, along with all but two of those earning their cards by way of the Web.com Tour Finals.
Headlining The Field:Adam Scott, Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Tommy Gainey, Harris English, Russell Henley, Vijay Singh, Bo Van Pelt, Stewart Cink and Guan Tianlang.
Here's a look at my top picks for this weeks Sony Open in Hawaii:
Adam Scott: The Masters champ was consistent in his 2014 debut, ultimately tying for sixth on the Plantation Course. As the highest-ranked player in this week's field, he remains a threat on a course where he tied for second in 2009.
Harris English: Twice a winner in 2013, English tied for 11th in Maui last week and tied for ninth here a year ago. He continues to serve as one of golf's rising stars and finished 15th on Tour last season in birdie average.
Jason Kokrak: As one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour, I really enjoy watching Jason play. We'll see if he's got his game dialed in, which will be a must again this talented field. Currently ranked 162 in the world, I think Kokrak will be moving up the corporate ladder this year.
Zach Johnson: Johnson had no issue taking apart the Plantation Course last week, and now finds a venue more suited to his game. A winner here in 2009, Johnson was one of the hottest players to end 2013 and appears ready to pick up right where he left off.
Jordan Spieth: So much for a sophomore slump. Spieth came within a shot of claiming his second career win last week at Kapalua, ultimately notching his fourth career runner-up. The 20-year-old has shown an ability to contend against any field on virtually any course.
