Story: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starts as Dr Robotnik (Carrey) finding his way back to Earth from the Mushroom Planet, joined by Knuckles an Echidna who has been hunting down Sonic for a gem that will give him ultimate power, something Robotnik wants for himself.
As Sonic is just trying to learn more about life with people, he gets a new visitor in Tails, who wants to prepare him for Knuckles, which will see them racing around the world for answers to stop Robotnik and Knuckles from getting their hands on it.
Thoughts on Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Characters & Performances – Sonic still wants to be a hero with his powers, he does need to learn about how to use the powers, but he will need to take on a new enemy, one that is deadlier than he has faced before. He will need to learn about friendship, and letting people into his life. He is the bundle of energy that keeps everyone around him on their toes and his quick wit gets him in trouble more often than not. Tails has come from another world to warn Sonic, he admires what Sonic has done before, coming to use his own skills to help along the way. Knuckles meets Robotnik, wanting to be taken to Sonic, he is stronger that Sonic, being an Echidna, who were at war with Longclaw over a gem, like Sonic, he is motivated to search for the gem to give him ultimate power, but isn’t accustomed to Earth’s way. Dr Robotnik has found a way off the mushroom planet, learning of something that would give him even more power, he has shown even more signs of the madness he has thrown himself into on this distant planet. Tom and side-lined a little bit more here, sent away for Rachel’s wedding, who easily is the most entertaining human character in the movie. Jim Carrey brings the energy he had before, while Natasha Rothwell could be seen as the scene stealer of the movie.
Story – The story here will see the next chapter in the Sonic adventures, looking to find his place on Earth, only to find himself getting more visitors and facing Robotnik once again, proving he has what it takes, to battle against the power hungry scientist. The story will have a lot of deeper meaning behind everything involving Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, as they are looking to learn about life on Earth, friendship and acceptance is the important. When it comes to the adventure that Sonic must go on, we see him finding new worlds to learn about, with his over confidence getting him in trouble too. The humans might end up getting a few random spots in the movie, which don’t always click, but will have some good laughs along the way.
Themes – Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an action-adventure movie that will bring a much-loved video game character to life again, using his speed to create some great sequences, along with Knuckles additional strength adding to the chaos we go through. The effects look amazing and with the rings that take Sonic to different locations, it only adds plenty to the story we see. The fact we go on more of a globe trot with the characters, makes the adventure feel even fresher for what we were being sold on.
Final Thoughts – Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an excellent sequel, filled with fun, family friendly entertainment with a big heart.
