High Hopes for “What A Name”
Mikel Delzangles is confident his exciting filly What A Name has all necessary attributes to make her presence felt in the Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 5.
The French trainer knows what is required to win on the Rowley Mile, having saddled Makfi to secure a shock victory in the 2000 Guineas three years ago. What A Name won twice as a juvenile and signed off the year with a fine second behind Richard Hannon's top-class colt Olympic Glory in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Arc day at Longchamp. She is as short as 6-1 for next month's Newmarket Classic after making a winning return to action in the Prix Imprudence at Maisons-Laffitte at the start of April.
Speaking on At The Races this morning, Delzangles said: "She is definitely on target and did very well on her comeback in the Prix Imprudence. She is on her way to Newmarket.
"She proved she was very good last year and she looked like she improved a bit during the winter.
"She's stronger and is still as calm as she was, that is one of her good points, she has a very good character. She definitely will improve, she wasn't fully fit at all (in the Prix Imprudence).
"Like in England, in France we have had a very bad winter and she definitely will improve. She would love good ground, but the way she ran in the Lagardere in very soft ground surprised me.
"I was very worried about the ground that day, so I think she will go in any kind of ground. I don't think the mile will be a problem."
Delzangles has a formidable hand in the three-year-old distaff division this year, with What A Name's stable companion Flotilla back for more after winning last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
Delzangles told At The Races: "I think she will stay in France for the French Guineas. She won't go to Newmarket. She's a little more complicated than What A Name. She needs a good pace and things have to be right for her in a race.
"She's more delicate than What A Name and won't handle as many difficulties in a race as What A Name would. She definitely has plenty of class, she's just a little bit more immature."
"Toronado" Tops Craven Four
Toronado and Dundonnell, the first two home in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, are set for a rematch in the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday. The Richard Hannon-trained Toronado got the verdict in South Yorkshire by half a length to maintain his unbeaten record but now has to give 3lb to Roger Charlton's colt as a result of that Group Two success.
Toronado has not been seen since but Dundonnell went on to America where he finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita.
Hannon has also declared Havana Gold, winner of the Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes and runner-up in the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy on this course last autumn.
He will be ridden by Jamie Spencer for owners Qatar Racing Limited with Richard Hughes aboard his stable-mate.
A small but highly-select field of four in the Group Three on the Rowley Mile is completed by the Godolphin-owned Tawhid.
Midday in foal to Frankel
Juddmonte Farms has confirmed six-time Group One-winning mare Midday has been successfully scanned in foal to Frankel. Midday, a daughter of Oasis Dream, won the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on three successive occasions for Sir Henry Cecil and also tasted victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, the Prix Vermeille and the Yorkshire Oaks.
Her former stable-mate Frankel retired at the end of last season as the world's highest-rated racehorse, unbeaten in 14 career starts.
Juddmonte general manager Philip Mitchell told www.juddmonte.com said: "It is now six weeks since Midday was last covered, and we are happy that everything is progressing as it should.
"With 16 Group 1 wins between the sire and the dam, it is a mating that has attracted a great deal of interest, and we look forward to next year's foal with great anticipation."
Definitely one a lot of people will be keeping an eye out for in the future!
