In its 8th year, one of the most popular online book events is now upon us ~ R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril hosted by Stainless Steel Droppings.  A righteously grand time, especially for readers who love a good scare!  Including about every category that evokes scary thoughts like Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror and Supernatural.  There are several levels of participation for reading and reviewing like fiction, short story and television shows/movies.  This year I’m going to be optimistic and go for Peril the First reading 4 books from any of the approved categories and Peril on the Screen of which several tv shows I watch would qualify, or I may get brave and watch a scary movie!

Part of the fun in participating in R.I.P. is the anticipation ~ planning and deciding which books to read & shows/movies to view and seeing what other bloggers have in store!  This is my third year participating and it’s such a fun event I can’t NOT join in!  R.I.P. officially begins September 1 and ends October 31.  Two full months of ghouls, goblins, ghosts, zombies, etc. etc.  For a suspense/thriller/mystery genre lover like myself, these two months are pure heaven!

So what books are in store for me {and you!}?

Two of my top 5 authors have recent releases and what better time to highlight their suspense novels than during R.I.P.?  Layton Green’s The Diabolist looks to be sufficiently eerie with the protagonist on the hunt for a satanic sect while Sandra Brannan brings Liv Bergen, newly uniformed FBI Agent, back to investigate the disappearance of a young child in Noah’s Rainy Day.

a couple of YA/Children’s creepy reads includes Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake which is the follow-up to Anna Dressed in Blood that I reviewed here.  I plan on listening to the audio of this one and anticipate a few sleepless nights if its anything like Anna Dressed in  Blood!  A middle-grades novel I’m looking forward to by famed storyteller, Cynthia Voight, is Mister Max: The Book of Lost Things.  Set in the early 20th century, Max’s parents are well-known for their theatre AND theatrics but when his parents go missing it’s left to 12-year old Max to find his way in the world AND find his parents.

This one is a little harder ~ for some reason I can read all kinds of scary things but when it comes to watching scary, well I’m just a big ole scaredy cat!  I can only watch the television show “Criminal Minds” if it’s daylight and if someone {preferably a known someone as opposed to a stranger someone} is inside the house.  ”The Walking Dead” has me closing my eyes at the goriest of scenes as does “Grimm.”  A couple of shows I’ve been able to tolerate without too many frightful screams is “Motive” and “Crossing Lines.”  Had to quit watching “The Following” early on after nightmares plagued me and every other person I saw I considered his and her mental stability.  So with all that maybe I can get in “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” or something just as tame!  I’d love your input ~ any tame-er movies you can recommend?
