Small Wedding Budget? Here's a Some Solutions
I don't care how much you try to stay on budget.  Planning a wedding with your daughter will always somehow or other increase.  Sure there are things you can cut back that won't make that much of a big deal.  However, there are items like the flowers and DJ which may not be the avenues you will want to trim off.
If you don't want to cut back on any of the people on your list, why not just have a cocktail party after the vows?  The only thing you will want to be vigilant about is letting your guests clearly know on the invitation that they will not be sitting down for a five course meal.  It will be drinks and some hors d'oeuvres.  It is a nice way for people to gather after the wedding ceremony.  Plan this type of reception in the later afternoon and make sure it wraps sometime before 8PM so that hungry guests can still pursue dinner at a
restaurant.

Another solution is to have a cake and champagne wedding reception.  You guessed it.  You serve cake and champagne and nothing more.  Much like the cocktail party reception this is another great way for people to come together without spending a fortune.  This is a great solution for the afternoon wedding thrower.  Again, be clear on the invitation.

Both of these types of receptions will not have dancing but music is still nice to have in the background.  Save the expense of a disc jockey and see if you can use a high quality boom box tucked discretely away.  Play softer music as not to cause a great dance break out.

While the reception has definitely taken full focus over the years, it is really the exchanging of your vows that is important.  If an over inflated dollar amount is plaguing you with worries and upset consider choosing one of these alternatives.  Relax and enjoy the day and what it stands for ultimately.
