The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) has reported over 1,100 incidents this year involving the use of the internet to intimidate and threaten individuals through explicit content.
Senior Information Security Engineer Charuka Damunupola from SLCERT noted that complaints of such incidents have shown a significant rise in recent times.
He highlighted that these threats often emerge in the context of failed romantic relationships,
where one party uses explicit content as a tool to intimidate or blackmail the other. Damunupola advised individuals facing such threats not to panic unnecessarily but to lodge complaints at the nearest police station.
He further mentioned that these complaints can also be directed to SLCERT for further assistance.
