Skincare Notes

By Winyeemichelle
When it comes to the realm of beauty, I can’t say that I’m particularly well versed in the twenty new launches per season or the differences between five shades of nude lipstick. Where my expertise lies is in skincare and I’ve been known to provide free guided tours of Sasa Supreme in Hong Kong, crafting seven-step skincare routines for friends. Ahem, Jade.
Skincare is one of my greatest loves. By far. I love the gentle fragrances, the often-beautiful packaging, the whole routine of popping your hair back and getting rid of the day leftover on your face. Plus, it’s pretty damn important to take care of number one because you only get one chance at keeping your skin at its’ very best. Right now, I’ve got my routine down to a tee and I thought I’d document it here for future reference and, of course, for yours. Everything can be shopped in the carousel below!

Kao Biore Make-Up Cleansing Oil

This cleansing oil is an affordable alternative to my beloved Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil. It’s an Asian drugstore staple and costs all of about £5 - totally one to look into if you’re making a Sasa online order or have a friend traveling to Asia soon! I find it to be incredibly pleasing to use: the oil lathers into a gentle foam that glides over your skin and removes face makeup as well as waterproof eye products and red lips without any hint of extra effort. Two pumps works well for my evening routine or just one for the morning.

Tsaio Charcoal Deep Purifying Cleanser

This Tsaio cleanser is a relatively new addition to my skincare rotation. I’ve been using it since March and I’m really enjoying it! Charcoal is a ‘trending’ skincare ingredient at the moment and whilst I don’t really condone the use of any products that rip your skin off, I do really rate charcoal itself. Milled into a wonderfully creamy consistency, this charcoal cleanser deeply purifies the skin, extracting everyday impurities from the pores and leaving the skin feeling refreshed, clean and not dry or tight at all. I use this after my cleansing oil (if wearing makeup that day) and just love it. Note: this one does sting sensitive eyes, so be wary!

Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser

This much-lauded cleanser from Glossier is the cornerstone of my skincare routine at the moment. It’s an everyday staple - I just finished my first bottle after about 3 months of use FYI - even on lazy days where I don’t do the entire seven-step routine. I find it a great follow-up to an eye make-up remover and it leaves me skin feeling silky smooth, like a baby’s butt may feel. 100% recommend giving it a try!

The Saem Cell Renew Bio Micro Peel

I don’t often exfoliate my skin as I worry that the action of exfoliating will be harmful, but when my complexion is feeling a little lacklustre, this is the product that I’ll reach for. Gentle and oh so deliciously fragranced, the peeling gel effectively gets rid of skin cells whilst renewing the skins surface for a brighter and more translucent look. I absolutely love this gentle exfoliator and would totally recommend trying it out!

Laneige Water Bank Essence EX

I skip this step a lot but the Laneige Water Bank Essence EX is a great gel-like serum for sandwiching hydration in your skincare routine. Like I said, I tend to skip this, usually on days where I reach for one of my The Ordinary skin boosters. It contains Hydro-Ionic Mineral Water that works to hydrate dry skin and repair skin damage (from wind, sun, etc.) by seeping deep into the skin. Tillandsia extracts help to maintain optimum moisture balance and thus reduce excess oil and sebum production. I often use it in my morning routine if my skin is feeling particularly thirsty before following up with my everyday moisturiser!

Aesop Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque

I must be on my fourth or fifth repurchase of this masque by now. Aesop’s Parsley Seed range is one of my favourites and, although pricey, I always do reap the rewards. This cleansing masque is my go-to product to reach for when I’ve spent an entire day out in the city. Everyday pollution, dirty air and other elements clog up the pores and I absolutely hate feeling like my skin has suffered for it, but this masque gets rid of all of that. Applied after cleansing for 15 minutes or so, it leave my skin feeling re-energised and oh so clean and soft. Follow up with toner and essence.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

My post on The Ordinary’s revolutionary products was an absolute hit on the blog a few weeks ago and I’m so pleased! I’m a huge advocate for their products and their Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 has snuck its’ way into my favourites. I spend at least an hour out in the open country air everyday with my pup nowadays and coupled with obligatory air-conditioning to beat the early summer, this product totally helps to amp up the moisture.

Glossier Super Bounce Serum

I really wish I reached for this serum more but then again, its size makes me sorta glad that I don’t. I picked up Glossier’s Super Bounce when they launched in the UK and it’s a lovely, inoffensive serum that claims to add plumpness and a fresh texture to the complexion. Housed in a beautiful lilac vial, I half love this product because it is SO light and fresh but I must admit I find myself reaching for my beloved The Ordinary ones over this. (I do, however, keep slipping it in my gym bag wash kit and it is awesome for a post-workout skincare regime!)

The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA

I’ve been waxing lyrical about the Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA from The Ordinary to my friends and/or anybody that’ll listen to me. If you suffer with hyper-pigmentation on your face, this little vial is somewhat of a godsend. Two drops used before moisturising around 3-4 times a week will do wonders over the course of a month.

My Beauty Diary Sheet Masks

Whilst I have an entire shoebox full of sheet masks by oh so many K-beauty brands, it has to be the Taiwanese My Beauty Diary sheet masks that do it for me. I’ve been using these since I was 18 (and I’m 26 now!) and I would recommend them to absolutely everyone. The range features different formulas to target different issues but my favorite is the Vanilla Aroma one for moisturising. (Best place to pick them up > Sasa.com)

Aesop Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Hydrator

A relatively new addition to my skincare rotation, this Aesop Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Hydrator is an absolute dream to use! Not only does it come in a pump bottle, making it much more user- and waste-friendly, the formula is lighter than my other Aesop favorite and perfect for the summer. It absorbs very quickly and leaves my skin feeling soft, supple and ready for makeup.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream

I wrote an entire post waxing lyrical about the Magic Cream by Charlotte Tilbury, but in a nutshell: this cream is oh so very deserving of its’ name. Rich but lightly ‘whipped’ to an almost mousse-like texture, I like to use a light layer overnight to calm my skin and bring it back to its fresh, dewy self. It also does wonders for sunburn and helps to tackle spots and blemishes!

Laneige Water Sleeping Pack

If I’m not using my Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream, then my skin is being treated to this Laneige Water Sleeping Pack. Again, I’ve been a devoted user of this since I was about 18: the gel-like mask absorbs deep into the skin to hydrate it and even out blemishes. I always wake up with a soft-lit glow to my skin the morning after I’ve used this bad boy.

Glossier Moon Moisturising Mask

The newest addition to my skincare army is the Moon Moisturising Mask from Glossier. It’s been in my rotation for around 3 weeks and I must say I’m really enjoying it! Once my Laneige overnight mask runs out, I won’t be repurchasing it as it isn’t cruelty-free and this one will certainly be taking its place. I lather a relatively thick layer onto my skin before bed and instead of washing it off after 20 minutes, keep it on overnight. And in the morning, true to form, my skin has a gorgeous soft-lit polish to it. Bloody love it.
Do we share any skincare favourites? Or do you have any bonus recommendations for me? I’d love to hear!
PS. Did you know? All of the photos in this post were one-shot wonders! No angle changes, just the first shot I grabbed. I am so damn lazy.
