The group of Independent MPs in Parliament will vote for candidate Dullas Alahapperuma at today’s election in Parliament to elect the new President, MP Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday.

He said 16 MPs representing the group were ready to vote for Alahapperuma with the intention of creating a new political culture in the country.

The MP stated this addressing a press conference convened by the Union of Independent Parties in Colombo last afternoon. Weerawansa said the independent group invites the JVP and other parties also to vote for their candidate at this critical juncture. While stating that Dullas Alahapperuma is the exact winner of the election, Weerawansa said that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa will also be in a high post under President Dullas Alahapperuma.

According to him, today is the day which will allow the members of the 225 to be forgiven for the wrongs they have done. The vote for the election of the country’s next President is scheduled for 10 a.m. today.

Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe, MP Alahapperuma and NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake are contesting at the election.
