Singapore Sportshub Opening

The Singapore Sports Hub opened its doors to the public on 30 June 2014. A fully-integrated sports, entertainment and lifestyle hub, the 35-hectare venue (think the size of 50 football fields) which cost $1.3billion to build includes world-class facilities like an Olympic-sized aquatic centre, multi-purpose arena and a water sports center complete with a diving pool. It also houses a cluster of lifestyle facilities such as the Kallang Wave shopping mall, restaurants, skate park, lawn bowl green, climbing wall, beach volleyball court, hard courts, and even a sports library with a respectable 80,000 books on sports, health and fitness as well as the Singapore Sports Museum showcasing the local history of sports.

This is what I call luxury exercise – a little girl does the hula-hoop with her fans – fanning her. I also want.

There are two sand courts along the waterfront where you can play beach volleyball or sports such as futsal, rugby and netball. What’s more awesome if that they are free for use, but booking is required.

Behold the crown jewel of the Singapore Sport Hub – the highly-anticipated National Stadium. Very much a Singaporean icon, it currently holds the record for being the largest dome structure in the world at 312 metres in diameter – and being the only one in the world which can host four different sports – rugby, cricket, football and athletics – by reconfiguring its 55,000 seats.

What’s more, it boasts of a retractable roof which also doubles up as a giant projector screen! It is able to close in about 20 minutes, allowing a match to go on regardless of the weather. Very Singaporean-kiasu in spirit indeed lol. A 1 1/2-hour tour of the stadium is available on selected days. Booking is required and a fee will be charged.

Watch a water polo competition or swimming and diving games at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. The aquatic center can hold up to 6,000 spectators and matches are broadcast on a giant LED screen. On non-event days, the pools are open to the public with an entry fee.
