While there are a lot of components to the serve, the most important part (I think) is the toss. And one of the best ways to get a better toss is to keep your tossing arm up as long as possible after releasing the ball. This keeps you from dropping your shoulder after the toss which can throw your balance off and shift your weight and momentum off to the side. So keep your tossing arm up as long as possible to get a better toss.
