ANCL Chairman W. Dayaratne PC yesterday said that it is a great achievement for Lake House to be able to print and deliver all newspapers as usual, regardless of obstacles in the print industry.
He said that Lake House has been striving to serve the public as well as the employees. Meanwhile, steps are being taken to overcome the obstacles and continue the newspaper industry. He was speaking at a ceremony held at the Lake House premises yesterday (30) to mark the 92nd Anniversary of the Silumina Newspaper.
“Silumina was instrumental in creating the art of children’s, women’s and health articles. In 1996 a Rasaduna supplement was added. At that time the Silumina Newspaper was known by the nickname ‘Ten Cents University’. I accept that too. From that time I read Silumina,” going through memory lanes,’’ he said.
He further said that Lake House faces challenges due to the emergence of competitive newspapers. With the current situation in the country, the shortage of news-prints has affected the entire newspaper industry. Chairman Dayaratne said the younger generation does not have much interest in reading newspapers. It has affected the industry because of their familiarity with the electronic media. All in the industry are duty bound to work together to maintain the publicity and respect of the newspaper, he said.
Lake House does its best for its employees. Steps must be taken to keep the press afloat in the face of all challenges in society, the ANCL Chairman added.
