Shrek the Third (2007) Review

When Shrek is to become the heir to the land of Far, Far Away he wants to ensure Artie takes up the throne instead and embarks on a quest with Donkey and Puss in Boots. While Princess Fiona must fend off Prince Charming who has still not got over being jilted.

⭐️⭐️

Shrek and Shrek 2 are two fantastic films that dared to be different and groundbreaking in terms of the visual animation but then also the stories and comedy. The issue with Shrek the Third was that the jokes were now to be repeated and quite frankly it loses a lot the magic created in the first two films. Leaving this to be somewhat disappointed by comparison.

Having given the film a rewatch I truly believe the biggest issue is that Artie is just a truly annoying character and we don't actually want to see him succeed and Shrek's plan to come off when it comes to the young Prince. He was just irritating from the moment they find him and throwing in some high school jokes was nothing exciting.

Not forgetting the attempted pregnancy announcement from Fiona to Shrek and not being able to hear because of the noise of the ship, it just felt even more cringe than I could actually remember. Then you throw in more Prince Charming which worked very well in Shrek 2 but we really did not need anymore of him.

We still get a few funny jokes and moments, but all a little bit worn. You cannot deny that the voice cast is impressive though and when you are so used to Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas in as the characters it is somewhat familiar and that is a positive for sure. Not forgetting Julie Andrews which is always an absolute bonus in any film!
