The OnePlus 7 Pro finally becomes official after being rumored and leaked to death. It’s the most expensive phone of OnePlus to date, which is no small thing to say because of its cheap, flagship-level handsets for a company that’s shot to popularity.
Whether they decide to warm up to this new price point is up to fans, but to be fair, OnePlus has added a few things to qualify their phone as a flagship beast.
OnePlus 7 Pro Specs First of all, underneath there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 powering it all, currently the most powerful mobile chip in the industry to date, the same one powering modern devices from Samsung, Huawei, and LG.
Perhaps the most important change, although not surprising, is the display. OnePlus has chosen to trash the notch of the OnePlus 6 T and produce an almost bezelless look that curves on the sides a bit. Like the Asus ROG Phone and Razer’s beastly gaming handset, the screen supports a 90Hz refresh rate, which, as CEO Carl Pei said previously, must be seen to be believed, as it doesn’t sound impressive on paper. OnePlus is a bit iffy on the official measurement, but says the screen is around 6.5 to 6.7 inches. It also supports HDR10 and HDR10+, but not Dolby Vision, oddly.
Other Features
This phone also has fast charging. OnePlus calls it Warp Charge, and in as little as 20 minutes it can juice up the phone to 50 %. A triple camera system, one standard, one ultra-wide camera system and one telephoto are on the back. There’s no selfie camera to be seen on the back; that’s because it’s hidden from the selfie mode via a motorized popup and it sprouts and then retracts after use.
At $669, as mentioned earlier, this device is the most expensive flagship of OnePlus to date. It’s not too damning a price point compared to Apple’s and Samsung’s $1,000 + phones — but considering that this doesn’t have an official waterproofing certificate, it’s not hard to imagine other balking ones. OnePlus claims to be too expensive to apply for a certification and instead dropped the phone as a marketing tactic into a bucket of water. There’s no fingerprint scanner to be seen because it’s underneath the display, and OnePlus claims it’s twice as large this time compared to the OnePlus 6T.
OnePlus 7 Pro Price And Release Date
Those who really want to go all the way— 12 GB RAM and 256 GB UFS 3.0 storage — would have to shell out $749 for a OnePlus 7 Pro spec’d out, which is still cheaper than most other handsets on the market right now.
T-Mobile is the U.S. phone’s exclusive carrier and will sell the mid-tier model for $699. Alternatively, customers can get unlocked versions directly from OnePlus’ website, and they’ll be compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
There will be three configurations available: a $669 storage model with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB, a $699 version with 8 GB and 256 GB, and a $749 beastly 12 GB and 256 GB model. Customers can choose between a glossy black finish, a matt blue color, and a gold-tone variant later. The telephone will be available on May 21.
Should You Buy It?
It’s complicated. On the one hand, this phone is probably just a slight upgrade from the OnePlus 6T. On the other hand, it’s worth noting the “slight” changes here. Of course, a person can live without a 90 Hz screen, and without the UFS 3.0 storage or triple camera array they can probably do. For now, people should stick to their current daily driver with 2018 and perhaps even 2017 phones. But it’s a bang for one’s buck for new owners. The lack of an official certification for waterproofing is a bummer, of course, and there is no headphone jack, which is a bit frustrating. But there is a wellspring of features here at $669, some found only on $1,000+ devices.
