Should I Straighten My Hair Before I Die It?

Should I straighten my hair before I dye it? That is the question that my friends often ask me and I have always given the same response. "It depends". As they say, the answer depends on a lot of factors.

Know Your Hair Type

This would allow you to decide on whether or not you should cut your hair long or short. Of course, long hair requires more maintenance than short hair. But then again, if you have really thick and long hair, you would naturally straighten it with the help of a flat iron once every few months or so. Just be sure to apply a good moisturizing product after you straighten it to preserve its condition.

Sun Exposer

Another important factor that you must consider is the time that you want your hair to be exposed to the sunlight. If you are someone who loves the sun, then you should probably keep your hair short. This would give your hair more time to absorb the rays of the sun without you having to worry about it ever getting damaged. But if you don't like the sun, then you might want to keep your hair long. It would give you more options when it comes to deciding on the color of your hair. Dark hair will go well with light colors and vice versa.

Consider Your Coloring Experience

If you are new at hair coloring, then it would be best for you to start off using lighter shades such as light peach, light brown and light silver. You can also use the lighter shades but only until you are sure that you are getting the results that you want. Dark hair takes a lot longer to dye and would require you to apply a lot of product before it turns dark enough. If you have dyed your hair darker before, then applying a lighter shade of color to it would probably be a good idea.

You Should Dye Your Hair or Not

Your age also plays an important role in determining whether you should dye your hair or not. The older you get, the longer your hair will take to change its color. The natural process of hair growth is slower as well. So, if you are an older person already, you might want to consider waiting a few years and trying again after the time elapses. Just make sure that you have the right coloring products for your skin tone so that your hair color will match that of your skin.

Type of Hair

Another important consideration would be the type of hair that you have. Straight hair is easier to color than curly or wavy. You will need less product for straight hair and vice versa. There are also some people whose hair is easily affected by the chemicals that are used in coloring. If you have this kind of hair, a good idea would be to use herbal hair toners that can solve the problem.

Coloring Products

You might also want to consider the coloring products that you are going to use. Some work better on dry hair while others work better on oily hair. It's always a good idea to use a product that can be used both on dry and oily hair so that you will be able to get the perfect results.

Final Words

Probably the most important question that you will have to ask yourself is: "How am I going to feel about this new color?" Red hair is very dramatic but you might not want to do it often since it could cause problems. So, it's a good idea to make a decision based on the long way you plan to use the product.
