Shoryu Ramen opens today in Kingly Court located just off Carnaby Street. The 1300 sqft space of 55 covers features an open ramen kitchen where diners can watch the chefs at work. Everyone knows Shoryu serves delicious Hakata tonkotsu ramen so instead of highlighting their dishes here are three facts about Shoryu Ramen Kingly Court in celebration of their third opening.
1. Rising Dragon
The name Shoryu is taken from a Japanese phrase meaning ‘rising dragon’ and how perfectly apt as Kingly Court is the newest addition to Japan Centre’s growing portfolio. The group now comprises of a flagship restaurant and supermarket on Shaftesbury Avenue, Shoryu Soho on Denman Street, a sushi & sake bar in Westfield Stratford City and an online shop.
2. Hakata Bei
The interiors are heavily inspired by Executive Chef Kanji Furukawa and Director Tak Tokumine’s home town of Fukuoka, the birthplace of Hakata tonkotsu ramen. A famous design practice from this region is Hakata Bei, a technique that employs roof tiles or ceramic in walls and ceilings in order to create a striking design aesthetic. The practice originated from a process used to repair properties damaged by warring clans where mud walls were created by mixing the rocks and roof tiles that were left scattered on the battlefield. As in the Soho branch, the Kingly Court location will feature an authentic Hakata Bei wall, only the second example of the traditional tiling technique to be found in the Capital.
3. Gekkeikan Sake
The bar will offer a huge range of sake such as royal warrant Gekkeikan Nouvelle from Kyoto, awarded the Monde Selection gold medal for 4 consecutive years 2008-2011. The bar will also serve Gekkeikan Gold which contains flecks of 24 carat gold leaf.
