Verdict: Tension Filled Horror

Story: She Who Must Burn starts by taking us into a tension filled small town where Angela (Smyth) is offering advice and help for women who have unplanned pregnancies but the town is filled with the Baarker family who are firmly against anything along those lines happening.

When Margaret (Staite) one of the wives of the Baarker’s has been on the pill and decides to run the rest of the family come for Angela to stop what they see as the wicked ways she preaches. The Baarker family want to make an example out of Angela when the problems and they will do anything they believe their God believes to be right.

She Who Must Burn gives us a story that plays the fine lines of the discussion about whether abortion is acceptable. We do get to see the extremes of the protesters against abortion. The film does have plenty of tension building through as we are left to guess what the Baarker’s will do next. While all those things are good we do have a lull in the middle because we have the Baarker’s needing to find their direction once more. I do feel this is a strong horror but it does lack a true scare moment.

Overall: Tension filled horror that really is saved by the final act.
