As Deadpool & Wolverine is predicted to be a huge box office success ahead of its July 26 release, the film’s director, Shawn Levy, has become the top choice for directing another Marvel Studios picture. While he is currently busy with Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, he is being considered by Marvel for another blockbuster.
Although the movie is still in its very early stages, sources suggest that Levy is contemplating the offer and that the studio handed over the script to him last week. However, Marvel Studios is also considering other options, given that Levy had previously turned down the offer. Reportedly, he was approached in mid-March, but due to scheduling conflicts, he didn’t accept it.
In addition to Deadpool & Wolverine, Levy also has director and executive producer duties for Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things. This means that Levy’s schedule is fully packed until next year. Initially, this timeline did not align with Marvel’s plans for Avengers 5, but reports indicate that the studio has pushed the film back. This has given Levy another opportunity to direct the MCU’s highly anticipated movie.
Meanwhile, Marvel’s repeated approach to Levy demonstrates how keen they are to work with him again, especially considering how significant Deadpool & Wolverine is for both parties.
The latest script is written by Loki creator Michael Waldron. Initially, the film was named “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” but it all changed after Jonathan Majors, who was set to star as Kang the Conqueror, was convicted of assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend.
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton was initially set to helm the film. However, he parted ways with Marvel Studios in November 2023. The currently untitled film is slated for release on May 1, 2026.
