The bail application filed on behalf of Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa was fixed for today (31) by Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe.
The Magistrate has ordered to issue summons to the Attorney General over the case.
The bail application was filed before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on the condition that an appeal will be filed before a High Court challenging the sentence issued by the lower court. Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced to two years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in relation to a case being heard over producing false information to obtain a diplomatic passport. She was also fined Rs.100,000.The Magistrate informed that the failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months in prison.
This is over an incident where Shashi Weerawansa had allegedly obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Immigration and Emigration Department.
