The main suspect who threw kerosene on a 16-year-old school student and setting him on fire by throwing a fire torch at him at Ampitiya on Saturday night   was arrested by the Police yesterday while hiding in a jungle area in Ampitiya. Police said the suspect had a grenade with him at the time of his arrest.

The student from Ampitiya, Kandy who obtained nine A’s at the recent GCE Ordinary Level exam sustained severe burn injuries in the attack.

Earlier the police said the person belived too have carried out the attack on Saturday night has fled the area and four police teams have been deployed to arrest him.

Police have received information that the suspect who is a drug addict is involved in many illegal activities.

The student who suffered serious burn injuries is currently receiving treatment at the Kandy National Hospital and the doctors say that his condition is gradually improving.

The father of the student, who is in hospital with burn injuries, said that while he was walking home with his son, a person with a fire torch came from behind and told them to stop and then the person sprayed something from a bottle on his son’s body and threw the fire torch at him.

The father stated that his son’s clothes and body caught fire and he fell to the ground struggling with difficulty.

He then stopped a three wheeler and took him to hospital. Police say that even the villagers are a afraid to give evidence against the suspect.
