Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon have left the events of His Dark Materials far behind.

In this snapshot of their forever-changed lives they return to the North to visit an old friend, where we will learn that things are not exactly as they seem . . .

Illustrated throughout by Tom Duxbury, the perfect re-entry for fans of His Dark Materials and a wonderful companion to The Book of Dust.

Ever since Lyra Silvertongue and her daemon Pantalaimon had been reunited, following their terrible parting on the shores of the world of the dead, Lyra had wanted to ask him about the time he'd spent away from her.

His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust are among my favourite book series. I hope the final book in The Book of Dust is released soon. In the meantime, this delightful novella filled the Lyra-shaped hole in my heart. The second season of His Dark Materials will help further when it airs next month. This is set just after the end of His Dark Materials. The story focuses on the change in Lyra and her daemon's relationship now they can separate, a thing only witches usually can do. Pantalaimon has never spoken of what happened when Lyra left him. Lyra is worried about what his silence means, what their ability to separate with mean in the future and is concerned that they both seem like two separate entities now when they were always one and the same. Lyra seeks answers from an old friend and is left with more questions. I really enjoyed this and wish it was much longer.
