I’m not sure how October managed to sneak up on me, though it probably has something to do with how busy grad school has kept me this past month. I can’t believe it’s already round-up time again! As always, I highly suggest pinning or bookmarking the round-up so you can come back to it whenever you have a few spare moments. Let me know what interested you the most, and if you think I missed anything.

September Disability News and Blog Post Round-up - Words I Wheel By

My Latest for HuffPost

Disability News

Disability Blog Posts

  • The Pain of Passing My Disability on to My Child – Oh my, does this hit home. Sounds familiar to the story of me and my mother.
  • The problem with “Spend a Day in a Wheelchair” – Yes, yes, a million times yes to this post! In case you don’t know how strongly I feel against disability simulation exercises, you can also check out my HuffPost article (which is linked at the bottom of Preston’s post) on why I Won’t Pretend That Disability Simulation Works.
  • Disability simulations should be left in the 90s – In keeping with the theme of anti-simulation sentiment, Stella Young is an amazing advocate whose latest article on the problems with disability simulation is a must read.
  • Who Am I To Stop It is loud – Just one more post on why disability simulation doesn’t work! Plenty of food for thought, and it’s written by one of my favorite activists, Cheryl Green. (Also, I’m a bit partial to it because Cheryl linked to my HuffPost piece and shared with me that I helped inspire this post. Such an honor!)
  • This is What the Empty Room Means – This powerful piece sums up perfectly just how deep ableism runs in society, and it’s written by an advocate I respect who is a fellow American Association of People with Disabilities internship alum.
  • Gabby Giffords and the Problem with ‘Inspiration Porn’ – Elizabeth Heideman is another fellow internship alum who has absolutely been nailing it with her pieces on disability lately. Inspiration porn has got to go.
  • 5 Fundamentals Of Disability Awareness – Concise, to the point, and important to consider.
  • Can we teach our kids to stop staring? – This post really gets me, because I know how it feels to have kids stare when they should really be taught to express polite, honest curiosity instead.
  • Wheelchair Bound”: In Pictures! – Please, people, STOP using the term “wheelchair bound” already. It’s so inaccurate. This post is spot on in explaining why.
