Selfie, Schmelfie

By Expatmum @tonihargis
So "selfie" is the word of the year according to the Oxford Dictionaries. It beat out "twerk" (thank the lord) and "binge-watch, which apparently means to watch lots of TV; I'd never heard of binge-watch myself but I'll bet people have been doing that the longest of the three.
I don't really get selfies. (And really Blogger and other auto-corrects - you're going to have to stop offering up "selfless" every time I try to type "selfie". It's official now.)
I suppose it's one thing for celebs to post photos of themselves every five minutes; they're a pretty ego-centric, needy bunch who just happen to be better-than-avergae-looking for the most part. I get the impression that they'd either self-combust or wither away if they weren't able to bestow their selfless  (grrrr) selfies on us at least once a day.
Normal folk though? And, doing normal, boring things too? That's what I don't get.
"Here's me putting a white load in the dryer". (OK, not quite)
"Here's me sitting with the same person I have lunch with every day".
Oh and, the best -
"Here's me with my colleague who, as you can see, isn't as photogenic as me."
Actually, on second thoughts, there's one group of people I wouldn't blame for selfie-ing. (New verb).
Mothers.
Hands up how many mothers have their photos taken (by other people) on a regular basis. If it's anything like this family, if I don't take a camera, nothing gets recorded. No one ever says "Here, I'll take one - you get in", and as far as posterity is concerned, my kids were left motherless at an early age.
I don't take selfies as a rule, although I did send this one to the kids and the Ball & Chain the other day.
Selfie, Schmelfie
I was stuck in the car and bored, in the middle of near tornado conditions, rain lashing down and lightening everywhere. No way was I getting out to be soaked and possibly electrocuted.
And there's the reason for not doing selfies. They make you look bloody awful. My nose doesn't generally take over than much of my face and I don't resemble a human rat.
Yup. I'm avoiding selfies.
