Weren't the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (and Vietnam a little further back) all presented to the people as being necessary for our own national defense. It wasn't true, but truth is usually thrown out the window when someone needs an excuse to go to war. Wars are usually fought for far more ridiculous reasons, like greed or religion. A true war of self-defense is a very rare thing.
