Selena Gomez: ‘Ugly people’ try to ‘get negative things from you’ on social media

Selena Gomez covers the September issue of InStyle. She’s sort of promoting her album, but mostly she’s just promoting herself, the life and New Age-y thoughts of Selena Gomez. I find I can hold two separate opinions of Selena: I can like her, root for her and wish her well, and I can also think she’s a messy drama queen when it comes to her personal and romantic relationships. All of that is on display in this InStyle interview – she talks about the stuff she learned after walking away from fame/social media for several months last year, when she sought treatment for anxiety, stress and depression. Then she gave me a severe case of the eyerolls when she talked about her relationship with The Weeknd.
Turning 25: “I kind of wish numbers didn’t exist sometimes, because I feel like I’m 15 some days, and then other days I wake up and I’m 40. It’s so weird, how one year can change everything.”
Going to the AMAs after canceling her tour last year: “When I came out, I was asked to go to the American Music Awards, and everyone around me was like, ‘Do whatever makes you comfortable.’ I didn’t want my fans to have a negative view of taking care of yourself, so I just went in head-on, and I’ll tell you, the first time stepping on that carpet was so overwhelming. I felt like my back was sweating.”
Self-care and social media: ““I went away for 90 days, and it was the best thing that I ever could’ve done. I had no phone, nothing, and I was scared. But it was amazing, and I learned a lot. I was in the countryside and never did my hair; I took part in equine therapy, which is so beautiful. And it was hard, obviously. But I knew what my heart was saying, and I thought, ‘OK, I think this has helped me become stronger for other people.’ I go to therapy. I believe in that and talking about where you are. But I’m in a really, really healthy place.”
The pressure of social media: “Because of social media, because of all the pressure that girls have, it’s so difficult. It’s good to be connected, to see things and to get a sense of what your friends are up to. But it also allows people to think they need to look or be a certain way. Now it feels more zoomed-in— you have ugly people trying to get negative things from you, and the energy makes you feel bad about yourself. You can’t help it. It’s very hard to find out who you are during all that mess and pressure.”
Producing ‘13 Reasons Why’: “I think if our show is able to start a conversation at the dinner table, event if it’s just ‘That’s terrible’ or ‘That was great,’ it’s still starting a conversation. It scared people, but it’s really important.”
Child stardom: “I think it’s really dysfunctional to be in the industry at a young age where you’re figuring out who you are. I don’t recommend it.”
Dating The Weeknd: “I don’t depend on one area of my life to make me happy. It’s really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy. I’ve wanted to be in a strong headspace for years, and I really wasn’t. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I’d feel insecure. You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense. I’m lucky because he’s more of a best friend than anything else.”
[From E! News & People]
“You have ugly people trying to get negative things from you…” I know what she meant, that people were being ugly to her on social media. But she might also mean that ugly people are hating on the poor pretty girl!!! You never know. I’d also like to say – Selena isn’t JUST an innocent social media victim, let’s be real – she regularly used social media platforms to trash her ex, Justin Bieber, and her relationship with the Weeknd has not really been without shady moments.
