Seinfeld and OITNB Actress Kathryn Kates Died at Age 73

Kathryn Kates, a seasoned performer died on Saturday. She appeared in  “Seinfeld,” “Orange is the New Black,” and “Many Saints of Newark.” A spokesman for Kates verified her death to EW. On Monday, her talent agency, Headline, paid tribute to her on their Instagram account.

“Our mighty @officialkathrynkates has passed away,” Headline Talent Agency stated. They expressed their grief on the IG post. “She will always be remembered and adored in our hearts as the powerful force of nature she was,” they said. Furthermore they stated, “She loved this craft and had enough patience to fill ten ships. A true icon. We will miss you.”

According to sources, Kates began her profession in 1974. She relocated to Los Angeles from New York City. Above all, she was one of the 25 founding members of the Colony Theatre Company, along with actor John Larroquette. Furthermore, Kates produced and starred in plays such as “The Grapes of Wrath” and “A Company of Wayward Saints”. She used to live in Silver Lake.

Kathryn Kates appeared alongside Ed Harris in several shows at Colony Theatres. For instance, it included an adaption of Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles. After that, Kates served as the principal understudy for the 2017 Broadway production Significant Other. Her theater expertise prompted her to take on various roles in regional tours and Off-Broadway shows.

Kates also appeared in over 70 TV shows and films over her three-decade career. This included “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “The Good Fight.”

She went on to have recurrent appearances in cinema and television. It includes Mrs. Carrabino’s neighbor on “Lizzie McGuire” and Jason Biggs’ mother on “Orange is the New Black.” She is famous for her appearance in “Seinfeld” as the Counter Woman. Here she worked opposite Jerry Seinfeld and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Kates returned to New York in 2006. After that she appeared in a number of productions. Further more she played the role of a Palestinian aunt in “Food and Fadwa”. This happened at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2012. Variety described it as “spirited perf of this tough widowed lady.”

Moreover, she most recently appeared in the Sopranos spin-off film The Many Saints of Newark as Angie DeCarlo.

Kathryn leaves behind a sister, Mallory, and a brother, Joshua.  She also has two sisters-in-law Sue Ann and Gloria, and a nephew, Ben.
