Secure Work Space: 5 Reasons Why Your Company Needs It

By Djridings @fivethingsnow

As more people use smartphones in their everyday lives, hackers are looking for ways to take advantage of gaps in security to steal information or cause loss-of-service for users. In fact, smartphone attacks have doubled over the last year, according to ABC 10 San Diego. Learn more about this risk and consider these five reasons why mobile security is a top concern for your business.

Malware is Everywhere

While you may think you are keeping your phone and data safe by downloading only from the official app stores, you are still in danger. While app stores like BlackBerry World do police new apps — and ideally, any that are malicious do not make it through — the system is not perfect. Be especially cautious with any app that asks you to enter sensitive information. Before you download an app, look for apps that have a history of good reviews and that the creators regularly update. If you are still questioning the validity of the app, conduct an online search and make certain everything is on the up and up.

Hackers Want Your Information

The reason that most malware exists is to collect your information. If a hacker gets one piece of information, such as your email password, it makes it that much easier to get further information and possibly cause you financial or personal harm. Protect your information by not providing it except when working with companies that have a privacy plan that you agree with. If you ever have doubts, it is always better to err on the side of caution.

Phishing for Smartphones

According to a 2011 Wall Street Journal blog post, smartphone users are more likely to fall for phishing frauds than those who access email from the computer. Phishing involves a scheme where the perpetrator gets the victim to provide information (such as usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, etc.) by sending realistic looking messages — such as one disguised to look like something from customer support. Phishing does not occur only by email; hackers are becoming more creative and finding ways to utilize social media and texting to steal your information too.

All Platforms Have Risks

With companies like Samsung, Motorola, Apple and BlackBerry offering smartphones, it means there are numerous ways for a hacker to access information. Just because you do not have the latest or most popular type of phone does not mean you are not at risk. Luckily, the operating system designers are finding new ways to protect you from attacks. BlackBerry now offers an app called Work Space that allows users to create a separate secure area where workers can access business’ email system and intranet. Malware cannot infect a company’s system due to the fact that this secure section is partitioned from the company’s main OS.
