Sean Connery's Most Memorable 007 Moments
This past weekend saw the passing of the original canon James Bond, Scottish actor Sean Connery. With this in mind we're going to take a look back at the James Bond moments that defined the man himself.
BOND DISMISSES DINK
James is getting a poolside massage when he's approached by CIA Agent Felix. This being time for business, Bond sends Dink away citing 'man talk', giving a firm slap on the backside for good measure.
BOND SEXUALLY ASSAULTS A PHYSIOTHERAPIST
Near the beginning of Thunderball, Bond is recovering some injuries at a spa. A physiotherapist who had the misfortune of being assigned to work on Bond meets him for an appointment. Bond grabs her mid appointment and forces himself on her in spite of her struggles.
BOND RAPES PUSSY GALORE AND TURNS HER STRAIGHT
One of the quintessential Bond girls, Pussy Galore is the leader of a team of stunt pilots working for villain Goldfinger. When encountering her in a bard, Bond attempts to 'seduce' her. She fights him off, so Bond pins her down and forces himself on her. The character, written as a lesbian in the original novel, then turns straight.
OK, obviously we're not doing some rose-tinted tribute to Sean Connery here. The man felt justified in misogynistically driven physical abuse of women. In his own words:
"I don't think there is anything particularly wrong about hitting a woman - although I don't recommend doing it in the same way that you'd hit a man. An open-handed slap is justified if all other alternatives fail and there has been plenty of warning. If a woman is a bitch, or hysterical, or bloody-minded continually, then I'd do it."
When asked decades later if his views had changed, Connery responded "not at all".
We enjoyed the classic Bond movies growing up, but they've been tainted know that they showcased the behaviour of a real life abuser. That's all we're going to say about him.
