Scotch Malt Whisky Society Cask No. 55.57 (aka Digging Up Ginger) Review

By Boozedancing @boozedancing

On today's episode of A Tasting at The Murder Table, we're tasting a whisky from the 57th cask (they call this one Digging Up Ginger) that the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has released from distillery #55. Per the SMWS decoder list on the Chasing the Dram website, distillery #55 is Royal Brackla. Here's a bit of information about the Royal Brackla distillery:

For over two centuries this Scotch sanctuary has woven a whisky tale that's steeped in history. Standing upon fertile farmland on the Cawdor Estate in the Scottish Highlands lies Royal Brackla Distillery, founded by Captain William Fraser in 1812. A distillery quite literally Fit for a King, Royal Brackla was the first Scotch whisky ever granted a Royal Warrant, by King William IV in 1833 - The King's Own Whisky, still reigning true today. The distillery's style is opulent and fruity with rich sherried notes. Every expression of Royal Brackla is finished in the finest first-fill sherry casks, sourced directly from Spain to ensure an opulent outcome for a noble drink.

And here's what the SMWS has to say about Digging Up Ginger:

We found ourselves amongst grassy meadows and fields of dry, ploughed earth with the sweet smell of pollen in the air. Buttery and creamy textures danced across grapefruit and vanilla rice pudding as notes of tobacco and leather mingled on a palate of ginger and spices. Sweet fruit jelly sweets then appeared with a glass of cloudy apple juice before we added a dash of water. We now found further spice with freshly cut flowers and the soft fruits of oranges, pears and clementines. Oat cakes joined rhubarb crumble garnished with crystalised ginger as honey melted on crumpets. Herbal notes appeared towards the finish where they were joined by thick staves of seasoned oak.

After reading all that, how can you NOT be excited to taste this whisky? We sure were! To find out if this whisky lived up to our expectations, click the play button on the following video:
