Scotch Malt Whisky Society Burns Night Bottling 2021 (Cask No. 112.73) Review

By Boozedancing @boozedancing

A short while ago, Limpd was lucky enough to win the opportunity to purchase a bottle of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's Burns Night 2021 release (there were only 280 bottles available in this USA exclusive outturn). Per whiskysaga.com, this particular whisky, which is Society Cask No. 112.73, is the 73rd cask that's been released from the Loch Lomond (Inchmurrin) distillery.

As is always the case with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), every release is accompanied by an amusing name and even more amusing tasting notes. Here's what accompanied this particular release...

Sweet and Savoury Excitement

The nose was a sweet and savoury mix - and a rather exciting one, we thought - brandy-soaked raisins and chilli chocolate, honeyed carrots, baked bananas and balsamic glaze over goat's cheese and figs. The mouth-feel was syrupy and rounded with butterscotch, dark chocolate, salted caramel and ginger cake sweetness plus slightly more elusive umami notes, sandalwood and nutmeg were evident. The reduced nose made us imagine sipping sweet Madeira wine on a leather sofa. The palate had classic woody sweetness - toffee and caramelized sugar, cinnamon toast, treacle scones and toasted nuts; then ginger, white pepper and oak on the finish.

We've been sampling SMWS whiskies for well over a decade, and they have yet to disappoint. This is not to say that we've loved everything we've tasted, but for the most part, we've enjoyed them all to varying degrees.
