Working with researchers at Samsung, a group led by Jang-Ung Park, a chemical engineer at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, mounted a light-emitting diode on an off-the-shelf soft contact lens, using a material the researchers developed: a transparent, highly conductive and stretchy mix of graphene and silver nanowires. By doing this, researchers have created transparent conductors that can drive LEDs while remaining flexible enough to sit on a contact lens. Although it would be an exaggeration to call this a display, since there is just one pixel, it’s possible to further this technology in future contact lens displays.
Scientists also see the seemingly inevitable, Glass-like wearable display as just one development path — they’re working on bio-sensors and active vision correction.
Contact lens displays would be too cool to resist, aye?
