Scenes From Quintandona, A Schist Village

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

Quintandona, a schist village in Penafiel

The restored village of Quintandona is part of the tourism network managed by Aldeias de Portugal, a national non-profit association which promotes rural tourism on the mainland. There are currently 83 villages in the project, and we are slowly working our way through the list to visit them all.

As villages go, Quintandona is pretty lively, with a local theatre, cultural centre, restored guesthouses, a wine bar, and even a broth festival!

The 11th edition of Quintandona’s Festa do Caldo (Broth Festival) is this weekend, September 15-17, 2017.

Quintandona is located in the civil parish of Lagares in Penafiel, about a half-hour drive east of Porto. The buildings are made of schist, slate, and granite, which set the village apart visually from the surrounding countryside. Take a virtual stroll via the pictures — it’s worth the drive from Porto if you’ve got a car.

These next photos are all from Winebar Casa da Viúva, where we’ve been three times now, but the previous two occasions were at dusk and nightfall. This is the first time I’ve been able to take daytime pictures there.

We first visited the wine bar in early 2015, when Ice the Dog was Ice the Puppy. We had to eat outside because we had him with us, but we loved being able to eat under the espigueiro, the elevated granary.

A big Porto Tónico (white port and tonic)… all for me:

Chouriço assado and peixinhos da horta (“little fishes of the garden” — a diminutive, of course!)
