In our long weekend jaunt around the southwestern parts of Galicia the other weekend, we visited some towns that Paulo had been to before when he walked the Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago in 2012. One of the ones he mentioned that he’d like to return to was Pontevedra, the capital of the county and province — also named Pontevedra — and the main city of this area called Rias Baixas.
After spending an afternoon there, I could see why Pontevedra warranted a revisit: the historic centre was full of visual surprises. It is very much a hub for pilgrims; references to the Camino abound, and it’s the last city before Santiago on a southern approach. But what kept us there that Monday was the recreational spaces around the city which made it an inviting place to while away the hours. Here’s a small collection of vignettes around Pontevedra.
