SBF’s Bahamian Prison Has ‘harsh’ Conditions and ‘degrading Treatment’

According to Bahamian Commissioner of Correctional Services Doan Cleare, the majority of facilities have been renovated since 2021 and no longer have “rodent issues.”

Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried may spend up to two months at Fox Hill Prison, a facility with known instances of physical abuse against detainees and “harsh” conditions, after being denied bail by a Bahamas Magistrate Court.

After a hearing on December 13, authorities in the Bahamas reportedly remanded Bankman-Fried to the medical wing of Fox Hill. Prior to his arrest on December 12, SBF’s legal counsel stated that the former CEO was utilizing Adderall and antidepressants, but it is unclear whether he will serve his sentence at the correctional facility, its medical unit, or another location.

According to a State Department report on human rights from 2021, conditions at Fox Hill were “harsh.” “Maximum-security cells for men measured approximately six feet by 10 feet and held up to six persons with no mattresses or toilet facilities,” the report said. “Inmates removed human waste by bucket. Prisoners complained of the lack of beds and bedding. Some inmates developed bedsores from lying on bare ground. Sanitation was a general problem, and cells were infested with rats, maggots, and insects.”

Fox Hill is the only prison in the Bahamas, so although the Carmichael Road Detention Center was intended for brief stays. However, Bahamian Commissioner of Correctional Services Doan Cleare reportedly stated that the majority of facilities had been rebuilt in response to the assessment from the State Department and that there were no “rodent issues”

As the extradition proceedings with the United States progress, Bankman-Fried will likely remain in custody in the Bahamas until February. The former CEO of FTX facing fraud charges from the Justice Department, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

After FTX ran out of money and went bankrupt, many people in the crypto space called for Bankman-Fried to be arrested. The former CEO went on a “apology tour” on major media outlets almost right up until he was arrested by the authorities. Even so, many people pointed out what they thought were inconsistencies and lies in his statements.

SBF’s fate in the Bahamas or upon his future return to the United States is the topic of many conspiracy theories on social media, with some speculating that he may attempt to bribe his way out of prison. If returned to the United States and found guilty of all charges, he could face a 115-year sentence, according to sources.
