Saturday’s Comic Con Schedule: Book & Author Spotlight

By Appraisingpages @appraisjngpages

Saturday’s panel schedule for the 2013 San Diego Comic Con was released today (here are my guides to Thursday & Friday) and Saturday brings some of the panels I’m most excited for but also most torn over how to actually make them all work!  Comic Con, why must you do this to me?!

Read below and tell me what you think in the comments!

When Grrls Fall in Love

11:00am – 12:00pm

From The Hunger Games‘ Katniss to Divergent‘s Tris, no one knows how to give a solid ass-kicking like a YA novel heroine. But when these young ladies aren’t saving the world, overthrowing powerful regimes, or slaying everything from zombies to dragons, they still find time for romance. Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments), Ally Condie (Matched), Veronica Roth (Divergent), Holly Black (The Coldest Girl in Coldtown), Marissa Meyer (Scarlet), Lissa Price (Starters), and Veronica Wolff (The Watchers) discuss the delicate balance between killing and kissing, and what it takes to properly woo a YA heroine. Moderated by Sherri Smith (Orleans).

Okay, I am SUPER excited about this panel!!  Veronica Roth is one of our favorites (reviews here of her books Divergent and Insurgent) and all the authors on this panel are A-List!  I kind-of met Marissa Meyer at comic con last year (she was doing signings of Cinder and I casually-sort-of-stalked her booth) but the other authors are all new for me, looks like I’ll have to do another library run today for more books by these great writers.

Also, the subject.  Strong, capable, females falling in love?  You basically just said my favorite theme in YA literature.  Bring it on!

Lionsgate – Featuring I, Frankenstein and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

1:35pm – 2:35pm

I, Frankenstein stars Aaron Eckhart and Yvonne Strahovski appear with film director/writer Stuart Beattie and graphic novel author/writer Kevin Grevioux. Plus, the cast of the highly anticipated second installment of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes to Hall H for the first time. Panel moderated by Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger. Never-before-seen footage is showcased from both films. Includes Q&A opportunity.

I’ve never attempted these huge Hall H or Ballroom 20 panels.  It just never seems worth it to miss everything else happening that day for one hour of content.  But then… this Catching Fire panel came along and the chance to see some of the stars in the flesh (even if I’m, like, 100s of feet away) and made me re-think everything.

Why oh why did they have to put this Grrls In Love panel just an hour before this one??  I’m going to have to choose now, and I have no idea what to do.  What do you all recommend?

Vertigo: The Sandman 25th Anniversary and Beyond! Room 6DE

3:15pm – 4:15pm

sandman

This year Vertigo’s flagship title The Sandman returns to comics in an all-new series written by Neil Gaiman (TheSandman)! Join Neil for a celebration of the 25th anniversary of this timeless series and an exclusive look at what is in store for the Lord of the Dreaming with Neil and his past and future legendary collaborators, Dave McKeanSam KiethTodd Klein, and J. H. Williams III.

I’ve never read Sandman but I hear nothing but AMAZING things about the series and its writer, Neil Gaiman.  Like I said before, I use Comic Con as a way to read all the things that have been on my to-read list that I just haven’t had a chance to read yet.  I’ve already checked my local libraries for the first collection of Sandman (it’s a graphic novel) and no luck, any ideas on where I can find it in less than two weeks? Haha!

So Friday has brought some of the panels I’m most excited for but also the most questions… now I have to make the difficult decisions about what to try to go to!  Any suggestions?
