Sasha Flute on TV! Lizzo’s Signature Instrument Is Trademarked

Lizzo wants to trademark her signature flute, which is also called the “Sasha Flute,” so that she can use it on a wide range of digital and physical products.
As trademark attorney Michael E. Kondoudis first reported on Twitter, the global pop star has recently sent in seven trademark applications for the instrument. The applications cover a wide range of categories, such as:

NFTs and NFT exchanges; Virtual worlds and digital gadgets; Animated TV shows and movies;
Action figures and “dolls in the shape of musical instruments”;
Clothes and other items;
There are books you can buy and books you can download.

On September 30, attorney Peter Nussbaum filed seven trademark applications for Lizzo, LLC with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Billboard had asked for a comment, but as of the time of publication, no one had replied.

So, can we expect a future animated show, plush toy, or NFT collection with Sasha Flute? Even though these applications aren’t a guarantee of success in the real world, they show that the person wants to do well. Kondoudis had previously told Billboard that most people who apply for trademarks already have plans in place.

He said at the time, “Usually in our experience what we find is people file trademark applications after the plans have already started being formed and in motion — not when they get this idea,Because it does cost money, it does take some time and it is a federal legal matter. So when you have an attorney file it there has to be some kind of concrete plan to go from where they are today to selling the products and service in the metaverse.”
Since her 2019 rise to fame with the release of her third studio album, Cuz I Love You, the flute, which she started playing as a child and studied at the University of Houston, has become closely associated with Lizzo. She has since utilized the instrument in numerous live performances, including the 2019 BET Awards and the 2020 Grammy Awards. Notably, a fan-run Instagram account dedicated to the instrument has more than 325,000 followers, indicating that Sasha Flute has a substantial fanbase.

The trademark applications coincide with Lizzo’s September 27 performance at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., during which she played a crystal flute that once belonged to former U.S. president and Founding Father James Madison. The Library of Congress, which lent the instrument to Lizzo for the occasion, defended the superstar in a series of tweets, noting that loaning out historic instruments is a common practice and that some instruments in its collection “were donated with the stipulation that they remain functional & be played.”
