They come with a good salary package, job security, medical benefits, travel allowances, fixed working hours, work-life balance and bonuses. Top government public sector organisations hire both fresh and experienced engineering graduates, opening up many employment opportunities. Read on to know more about sarkari jobs for engineers.

Public Sector Undertaking (PSU)

Public Sector Undertaking companies are owned by the central or state government, and candidates are recruited through the GATE examination. You are evaluated based on your scores and are asked to attend the interview, and usually, work with your core branch of study.

Sarkari jobs for Engineers (All Branches)

UPSC examinations
UPSC examinations pave the way for a successful sarkari job such as the IPS, IAS, IRS and IFoS – to name a few. Though anyone is free to sit for these examinations, engineers have recently started applying for them.
Eligibility: Candidates must be aged below 32 years and have a Bachelor’s degree
State Public Service Commission (SSPC)
Eligibility: Candidates must have cleared their graduation examination.
Selection: Candidates must clear the preliminary stage written test and personality test.
UPSC Indian Engineering Services
Eligibility: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from any recognised institute.
Selection: Candidates must clear the following examinations: Preliminary, written examination – Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Electronics, and Personality Test.
RBI Grade B
Eligibility: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from any recognised institute.
Selection: You must sit for a Phase 1: computer-based, objective-type examination (Reasoning + Quantitative + General Awareness + English), Phase 2: computer-based subjective written examination, and personality test.
Bank Probationary Officer
Eligibility: Candidates must be aged below thirty years and have a graduation degree.
Selection: Candidates must clear the computer-based objective-type examination – Tier 1 (English + Quantitative + Reasoning) – Tier 2 (Reasoning + Data interpretation + Economy) – Tier 3 (Group discussion + interview).

PSUs through GATE

Civil/Mechanical/Electronics/Electrical Engineering
BHEL Engineer
Eligibility criteria: A highly popular sarkari job for engineers, candidates must have a full-time bachelor’s/five-year integrated master degree in engineering.
Selection: Candidates have to clear a computer-based written examination and interview.
Salary: ₹50,000 per month (training period), which can increase between ₹60,000-₹1,80,000
ISRO Engineer/scientist
Eligibility: Candidates must have a B.Tech or B.E. degree with first-class (CGPA 6.84/10 or aggregate minimum of 65%).
Selection: Candidates have to clear the selection process, written examination and interview.
Food Corporation of India (FCI) Junior Engineer
Eligibility: Another well-paid sarkari job for engineers, candidates must be aged between 18-50 years old (reservations for the SC/ST/OBC communities). Moreover, they should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering with a one-year work experience.
Selection: Candidates must clear the written examinations Paper 1, Paper 2 and a skill test.
Salary: Candidates earn between ₹11,100-₹29,950
Airport Authority of India (AAI)
Eligibility: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Technology/Engineering with GATE scores.
Selection: Candidates are evaluated through their GATE scores.
Salary: Another much-coveted sarkari job, candidates can earn a hefty CTC of approximately ₹9.1 lakhs.
Metro Rail (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru)
Selection: Selection process varies with the authorities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru); candidates must clear written examinations and interview.
Salary: Candidates earn anywhere between ₹33,000-₹1,00,000.
Port Trust
Though each port has its own examination pattern, candidates undergo walk-in interviews due to limited vacancies.
State Service Public Commission (SSPC) – Technical Service (Mechanical/Civil/Electrical Engineering)
Eligibility: Candidates must clear a three-year diploma in these engineering branches.
Selection: The examination pattern is different in every state.
Information Technology/Computer Science Engineering
NITI Aayog – Young India Professional (contractual for two years)Eligibility: Candidate should be aged below 32 years of age and have a graduation degree.
Technical/Scientific Assistant/Scientific group B NIELIT – Ministry of Electronics and IT
Selection: Candidates are evaluated through an OMR-based written examination (Computer + General Knowledge and Aptitude).
Candidates: Candidates earn between ₹56,100- ₹1,77,500
