‘Necessity is the mother of invention,’ that’s what I had heard so far. But when I look around me, I realize that invention also leads to the birth of new necessities. For example, twelve years ago, we did not have any phone in our home and life was still going on fine. But now, I feel as if I won’t be able to have a comfortable sleep unless I have my smartphone at my bedside table within an arm’s reach!
And now, ever since I tried Samsung Gear 2 and gear Fit, I’m feeling something similar about smartwatches too. I NEED one on my wrist!
But anyway, before I lose myself in dreaming about smartwaches, here’s a quick comparison between Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear Fit.
Similarities: Both Gear 2 and gear Fit have super AMOLED display. Both are IP67 Dust and Water Resistant. Both have Accelerometer, Gyro, Heart Rate sensors. Gear 2 has an additional IrLED sensor as well. Both have a set of various health features which include Sleep tracker, Pedometer, Exercise tracker and inbuilt Heart Rate Monitor. These smartwatches also have handy apps like stopwatch, timer, and Media Controller to control music in compatible smartphone. They also have changeable straps and various customization options. And they can both receive notifications of incoming calls, messages, alarms, events and mails from compatible smartphones. And they can both be woken up with just a twist of the wrist. Both have a physical Power key too. Also, both Gear Fit and Gear 2 have Find My Device feature that can be used to ring up the compatible smartphone. However, with these similarities,there are many differences in them too. These are:
Specifications:
For Operating System, Samsung Gear 2 has Tizen based wearable platform. It has 1.0 GHz Dual Core processor, 512 MB RAM, 4GB Internal Memory for storing images, contacts, voice memos, songs etc. Gear 2 has a 1.6” Super AMOLED (320×320) display, 300mAh battery power and 2 MP AF camera.
Gear Fit has 1.84” Curved Super AMOLED (432×128) display, and 210mAh battery power and also runs on Tizen based operating platform.
Appearance: Gear 2 is 36.9 x 58.4 x 10.0 mm in size and weighs 68g. Whereas Gear Fit is 23.4 x 57.4 x 11.95 mm in size and weighs only 27g. As can be seen, Gear Fit is the sleeker of the two watches. And it also has a curved display. While Gear 2 has a square shaped face, Gear Fit is in rectangle shape. Both can be combined with different coloured straps. Gear 2 can be combined with Charcoal Black, Gold Brown and Wild Orange colours. Gear Fit can be paired with Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange. As for the clock faces and display background, both watches offer various clock faces displaying different kinds of clock designs and displaying different information like weather, pedometer count etc. As for background colour, Gear 2 can be customized with four background colours. Gallery images can also be set as background. Whereas, there’s no gallery in Gear Fit. But it offers far more variety of background colours ranging from gray to bright pink. Gear 2 can be fastened with a secure clasp. Gear Fit can be fastened simply by inserting the two pins on one strap into the series of holes on the other strap. Gear Fit can be customized for use on left or right wrist and its display layout can alter between horizontal to vertical. The display of both of them looks nice and has good touch sensitivity.
Features: When it comes to features, Gear 2 comes packed with many more features than Gear Fit. Most importantly, Gear 2 can be used to receive and make calls. But Gear Fit can only receive notifications of calls which can then be rejected with an optional rejection message. Also, Gear 2 has a 2 MP camera which can click pictures using voice commands or by just tapping on the screen and offers several picture modes. However, Gear Fit does not have any camera. Gear 2 can also carry a limited amount of music and images, which Gear Fit cannot. Gear 2 also has WatchOn Remote which can be used to control electronic devices like TV, Set Top Boxes etc. It also has S Voice for voice commands and Voice Memo to save quick audio memos on the watch and automatically also on the compatible smartphone, just like the pictures clicked from the camera. On Gear 2, one can also browse through Contacts and Logs. While Gear Fit only has a Music Controller to control music playing on the smartphone, Gear 2 also has a Music Player to play the music stored in the smartwatch itself. Gear 2 also has a Weather app to display the current weather information.
As can be easily judged, while Gear Fit wins by being curved, sleeker, more light weight and having more options for background colours, Gear 2 wins by having more features. While Gear 2 can be used to receive and make calls, shoot pictures, Gear Fit does not have any calling or camera features. But being sleek and light weight, it is definitely more comfortable to wear and looks more stylish.
