Samsung Galaxy Z Flip foldable smartphone launched

2020 is the year of foldable devices. After the failure of Samsung Galaxy Fold, the South Korean manufacturer has tried its hands yet again on a foldable smartphone, and announced the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip at the Unpacked 2020 event.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip features

The smartphone comes in a compact clamshell design, i.e., it folds from top to bottom (rather than left to right as seen on the Galaxy Fold) just like the recently launched Motorola Razr.

When open, the Galaxy Z Flip features a 6.7-inch screen ( 2636×1080 pixel resolution). The primary camera is a dual lens setup, with each lens being 12 MP. There is no optical zoom, but ultrawide shots are supported. The device runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. It has 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal storage, with no option to expand it. The fingerprint sensor rests on the side of the device. It runs Android 10, and has a 3,300 mAh battery. 5G is not supported.

The display can also be split into two 4-inch screens to run two different apps on each half. For instance, the camera viewfinder can be placed on the top half while the controls can be pushed to the bottom half. The phone can also be used in laptop style, by propping it half way open.

The primary camera can be used to click a selfie when the device is closed shut. The smaller secondary display on the exterior is then used as the viewfinder.

Samsung claims the hinge mechanism shall hold good for around 200,000 folds. A tiny shield protects the hinge on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, thus preventing dust particles from entering.

Pricing and availability

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is available in black, gold, and purple color variants. It is priced at $1,380 ( ₹98,400 approx.). Shipping starts on February 14.
