In the new romantic film, “The Fault in our Stars,” True Blood’s Sam Trammell palys father Michael, whose daughter Hazel (Shailene Woodley) is dying from cancer. Being a dad to two-year-old twin sons Winston and Gus with his girlfriend Missy in real life, Sam struggled to keep it together during production.
“It’s a scary thing to inhabit when you have children of your own,” he sighed to Refinery29. “I was sensitive before, but now I have such a soft spot for kids – I’m so much more profoundly moved by them. I remember being in Pittsburgh when we were shooting and seeing a boy and his father sitting on a bench and just that sight made me cry.”
Natalie Dern plays Hazel’s mother Frannie in the movie. The cancer-stricken teenager soon falls in love with a fellow sufferer called Gus (Ansel Elgort), who she meets during a support group.
Sam thrived performing alongside Shailene and took away some valuable life lessons once shooting had finished.
“That’s one of [mine and Natalie's] biggest challenges as parents: to not show our fear to our daughter. Everything gets centred around Shailene’s character and that’s why she has that fear of being a grenade, of ruining everyone’s lives when she dies. There are moments when we go to the bathroom and cry, but they don’t show much of that because it’s Shailene’s struggle, and you need to see her view of us,” he added.
“I actually learned a lot from Shailene on the set. She’s very aware of things, like what she eats and drinks and how that affects the planet. So, I kind of learned how to be more green from her.”
