In the past few years, True Blood’s Sam Trammell has become a real expert at being a dad. His True Blood character, Sam Merlotte is soon to be a dad, and plays a dad in his new film “The Fault in Our Stars,” and he also is the proud father of two 2-year-olds, Winston and Gus.
So, during a recent interview with Zap2it promoting the final season of “True Blood,” Trammell was asked about being a dad and he shared the most important thing he’s realized ever since his girlfriend Missy Yager gave birth on Aug. 9, 2011.
“For me, just being present and being there,” he says. “Putting the time in is really, I find, one of the most important things that I do as a father. It’s literally just being there.”
Even Trammell acknowledges that’s easier said than done. “It’s so easy not to be,” he admits. “It’s so easy to go to your computer or get on your phone or just do stuff when you’re with your kids. I see it all the time. We really have so many ways to distract ourselves, and distract ourselves surreptitiously. I try to really be present with them when I’m with them, and try to be with them as much as possible.”
Beyond that, Trammell finds fostering creativity to be key.
“Building confidence and positive reinforcement, things like that are really valuable for my kids. And keeping them creative, and play,” Trammell says. “It’s a straightforward thing to start teaching them their ABCs and start drilling numbers into their head and letters, and of course we do that to a certain extent and it happens while you read to them, but I think fostering creative play is really good and playing pretend games with them, all those kinds of things are really important to me too.”
Though that might sound like Trammell is fostering little actors-to-be, he says that’s not a path he would intentionally put his children on. “Oh my gosh, no, definitely not,” he says. “I wouldn’t discourage it, but I definitely am not going to necessarily encourage it either.”
